I'liani was born to an adventurer mother who met her father, who was the nunh of the Buffalo "I" tribe. As an outsider, her mother was alienated by the tribe, and once I'liani was born, she ran away.She never felt empty that her mother left her but felt bad to bother her father when she needed things, and so she started to survive on her own.When I'liani turned 5, she got lost in Western Thanalan. She prayed to Llymlaen, the deity of the navigator, and yet it wasn't until she was taken in by a single father that she was found.The man was one of her father's clients. She met him at one of her father's dealings in the city. When she returned to her father, she never realized how much she missed him until that moment. As she grew older, however, she looked more like her mother, and the clan slowly isolated her while her father feigned ignorance about this issue.Her relationship with her father became estranged as time went on; after all, her face looked more and more like her mother.

This growing sense of abandonment caused her to have problems feeling secure in relationships, as well as being untrusting to many at first glance.Despite her gripes about her clan, she made friends with many of her siblings. She continued to accompany her father to his usual trading and dealings in Ul'dah. The lifestyle in Ul'dah piqued little I’liani’s interest in other cultures, like monogamous relationships, live performances, and different book authors. These all only highlighted her interest in romance novels and her growing interest in becoming a theater star.

The "I" Clan wasn't really strict with their beliefs, letting many leave the clan, dwindling their population in the next few years.When I'liani turned 21, the Seventh Umbral Calamity happened. The tribe was heavily impacted, with only a few of I'liani's generation surviving to the point they practically dissolved. Money and goods were tight at this time, and the remaining members would hunt and scavenge what they could to survive. I'liani had a talent for charisma, built from observing her father when she was a child, and often persuaded traders and merchants into their favor. This gained her respect within their clan, and her relationship with them got a little bit better.During this time as well, I'liani has been hiding her desire to see more of the world. After all, all she knew was her clan and Ul'dah. Sure, she has a horrible sense of direction, but it didn't stop her from wanting to experience places, especially Limsa Lominsa.

I'liani has heard many things about Limsa Lominsa, a place of freedom and riches—something she hopes to have one day as a musical theater actress. It is also the place her mother was last seen, as written in a letter that was sent to her father.So, she started training with the bow, gradually learning how to use it and helping with hunting. She was agile and adapted easily to situations, yet her eyes constantly misinterpreted distances, much to her dismay.Her love for romance novels only strengthened as well, leading her to try out different relationships with different people and races. Many end as casual flings, which led I'liani to feel disappointed as to not be able to find the 'one'.

At age 26, she sets her plan in motion. With her father's permission, she embarks towards Gridania. Her relationship with her father at this point is still complicated, yet she sends him trinkets and letters to update him on how she's been doing. With her skill in the bow, she gained the bard jobstone, furthering her love for singing and combat.She was drinking in a tavern, singing along, when she noticed a conjurer that looked familiar but out of place in that tavern. “Rich” was the first word she thought of. Curious, I’liani approaches and tries her hand to get free drinks out of the rich-looking miqo’te, Beah Magoa. However, interactions with her frustrated I’liani.I’liani would frequently bump into her as they accepted similar quests. They started to adventure together out of convenience, which led to rainy fights, late-night travels, and getting out of bad situations together. Their party for convenience became a deep-seated bond.At some point, she found out she was one of the chosen 'Warriors of Light', Beah being the other one and many others out there. I’liani took her responsibility for saving Eorzea seriously. She told her father right away through her letters and hoped for strong approval from him, but she didn't receive a letter back.

Being the Warrior of Light, she had the connections to get to Limsa Lominsa. The sea breeze and the white buildings were everything she dreamed of. She hurried to finish her current duties, then spent her free time looking for her mother and doing some odd jobs to kickstart her theater career.While she continued her adventures, she noticed her eyesight declining, letting her miss her shots more frequently.During the night, when she couldn't sleep, she would walk across the docks of Limsa Lominsa.One fateful night caused her to stumble into the Dutiful Sisters. Joining the rogue's guild, she banded together with V’kebbe and Perimu, harnessing great skill with the daggers. This led her to put down the bow she once proudly used. Her mastery of the knife would also lead her to Oboro, where she would gain the ninja jobstone and the power of ninjutsu.At one point, she felt affection for the guild's chief, Jacke Swallow. A drunken night with the two led them into each other's arms and a passionate relationship.
